Professor Vithalbhai Ambalal Patel was born in Shertha, Dist. Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. His parents were hard-working farmers and traders. He had 2 elder brothers and 3 elder sisters.
He did his schooling at Sarva Vidhyalaya in Kadi, BSc with Mathematics from MG Science Institute in Ahmedabad, and MSc in Mathematics from Sardar Patel University. While being a lecturer at MG Science Institute in Ahmedabad, he did theoretical research in General Relativity. He got admission to University of California at Berkeley, for PhD in Applied Mathematics. He did his PhD under the supervision of Professor Hans Einstein, with research related to Turbulence in Fluids.
After completing his PhD, he joined the Mathematics Department of Humboldt State University (now known as California State Polytechnic) at Arcata in California. While teaching there for many years, he published a few note-worthy research papers and also a text book on Numerical Analysis.
After retiring from there, he built a small Ashram-type abode in his home town, and started doing social work and general writing. He has published a few books and numerous articles in Gujarati, all related to mathematics and general science.
He has a great family, with wife Latika, son Mihir, daughter Hemakshi, daughter-in-law Yogini, son-in-law Anant, and 4 grandchildren. He remains well connected with relatives, and academic and non-academic friends.
